Cynthia McKinney: In her own words
I have signed so many online petitions, for impeachment, to not vote for any candidate who has ever voted to fund the war, but ultimately our today and tomorrow will be written by those who dare to act. As Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Dr. King, SNCC, and the Black Panthers, and the hundreds of thousands of others who forced the southern part of the United States into the 20th Century. I'm encouraging all peace loving Americans to not only register to vote and to vote, but to run for office so we all can have good people for whom to vote!
I have endorsed Cindy Sheehan, the mother who lost her son in the Iraq war, who is now running for Congress in San Francisco against Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic Leader who took impeachment off the table and who continues to fund the war. And I might very well become a candidate for President in the United States under the Green Party banner. (emphasis added)
The complicity of both major political parties in the global and domestic mess emanating from the United States is becoming crystal clear.
Each one of us, individually, has no choice but to become the leader we are looking for. Otherwise, we will continue to get what we've always been given: handpicked leaders who don't represent us.

Cincinnati host to 25 running for nine seats
Remember when Gary Coleman ran for Governor? Well, it would seem that Cincinnati has something along that line every couple of years, as more than two dozen people are running for a seat on the City Coumcil. Apparently some of the candidates are Greens.

Who should pay for primaries?
Since primaries are a way for a political party to narrow the field of possible candidates to one of their members, why should taxpayers cover the cost?
Now, that same argument is made by some against public financing of elections. "Why should the taxpayer pay for the politicians to run adverts?"

CT Green lawsuit moves ahead

OK, so that's not a direct quote, and not every lawyer is a liar...and sometimes they do important work. Justice would be hard to protect without their help. The CT Greens would be dead in the water I imagine were it not for the help of the ACLU.
You see, CT passed a public finance law and left us out in the cold. Dems and Repubs get our tax dollars, but we Greens, Libertarians and independents can just join the "majors" if we don't like it they seem to be saying.
Well, according to the Ballot Access News, the CT Greens lawsuit, with the help of the ACLU, is moving forward. Perhaps the judge will be unable to understand why some animals are more equal than others.

Pat LaMarche faces fine for sloppy paperwork
Are you good with paperwork? You know, crossing every T and dotting every i? I'm not. I even got fired from a job for filing a photocopy of a receipt I had already been reimbursed for by accident. That sure took a bite out of my hide, and frankly, it was 100% boo-boo.
Now it would appear that Pat LaMarche's campaign for Governor in Maine may face similar problems, although no one seems to be at risk of loosing a job! The Sun Journal is reporting that LaMarche faces up to $400 in fines for paperwork violations of state record keeping laws. I am not trying to diminish the importance of complying with the law. They report that every gubernatorial campaign had similar problems.

Cynthia McKinney to visit Fort Mill, SC
On Monday, November 1st, the community center behind Jerusalem Baptist Church at 1003 Steele Street in Fort Mill, SC will rock with the wisdom and wit of former Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney. Currently attending the Elevate Festival in Austria, Rep. McKinney served a dozen years in Congress and as her last act filed papers to impeach President Bush, VP Cheney and Sec. of State Rice.
Her visit is sponsored by the York County (SC) Greens. Her visit is expected to boost voter turn out in the coming town council race, and hopefully will benefit Bryan Smith's run for Fort Mill Town Council.
The event will begin at 6 PM with a press conference and Rep. McKinney will address comments to the crowd starting at 6:30. Light refreshments will be served and local talent will grace the stage in advance of Rep. McKinney's address.
If you know anyone in the Carolinas, please ask them to attend.

As amazing as it seems, a write-in candidate for Mayor of South Bend Indiana was included in a debate with the Republican and Democratic candidates. Yes, I know...I am amazed too! You can read all about it right here.
Tucson Mayoral race hits high gear
With the Democrats taking a powder this year, only the Greens stand between the incumbent Republican mayor and another term. This article does a good job of covering the candidates and the race.
Baltimore Greens get busy at the market
If you've ever been to Baltimore City (as I am told the locals call it), you have likely been to the Lexington Market. A huge assortment of produce, fish, crafts, and now, political opinions are there for the asking. Maria Alewine, who is running for President of the City Council, and carrying the message of hope that is the Green Party to voters in that one-party city. Good luck Maria and fellow candidate Bill Barry...you're getting the word out!
Judge rules that NJ Greens are a political party
and as such, they are entitled to some of the same benefits as the other parties, such as campaign finance and lobbying. This is a huge victory for the NJ Greens, and George DeCarlo and the rest deserve congrats on a job well done. More can be found over at The Wilder Side.

WKSU sez Robbins is long-time Green
The "celebrity" factor is always at play in politics. I don't put Ralph Nader nor Cynthia McKinney into the celebrity category because their reputation is not for their jokes or performances, but for the work they have done in the arena of public affairs.
Tin Robbins is a celebrity, and I imagine he would acknowledge such. According to this article at WKSU, Robbins is a long time member of the Green Party.
I think it is to our credit that we don't flog our celebrity members. I have read about Bonnie Raitt and Patti Smith being members, and I know that Al Lewis (Grandpa Munster) and Malachy McCourt have run for office with the Green Party, but that still is not the same as Whoopie Goldberg or "The Rock" using their considerable talents to promote the Democrats and Republicans.

One of the few places outside the Green Party where I feel sure my donations are being well spent is Ballot Access News. Richard Winger, ballot access guru, runs the site. Today I post two links to articles of interest to Greens specifically.
This one deals with we Greens making the race for Mayor of Tucson into a two person race by running against a Republican. The Democrats didn't even try to compete.

NJ Greens run on lower taxes and property rights
One of the things that frustrates me no end is the assertion that the Green Party fits into the traditional "left-right" political scale, when in fact those old approaches really don't fit we greens. Case in point: four Greens running for office in New Jersey. According to this article, four Greens are running for local offices in the Holmdel, NJ area, and all four are concerned about high taxes driving people from their long-time homes. They also are concerned about people losing their property rights through the use of eminent domain.
Is that a Green position? Yep! Is it "left", or is is "right" to support people against government excess? That I don't know, but I do know that it's Green!

Alex Walker hits the big time!
Alex has been writing at Green Commons and also at California Greening for some time, and now he has made the big time! He wrote a fantastic column published at The L.A. Times online. I would strongly encourage my readers to click on the link, read the piece, and comment. If we can get some clicks going his way, maybe the L.A.Times will see the wisdom of putting Alex in their print edition.

I gather that this piece may by the only one written about these candidates, and while the article shows them in a positive light, I can't help but wonder if they would have written the same article if the party in question were not the Green Party. If the dems and repubs each get their own article, that would be unfair, but par for the course.

This article at the San Jose Mercury News is a re-run of an AP story that says Rep. McKinney registered in CA several months ago, but makes no mention of how she is registered.
I *thought* I had read that Rep. McKinney had registered as a Green. I sure hope I am right. For me personally, I am fine with someone registered independent seeking our nomination, but for many Greens, this would represent a stumbling block.

Ahmad Ali Mitchell-El runs write-in campaign
He's seeking the post of County Executive in Suffolk County, New York.
I wrote earlier saying that I didn't understand why people engage in write-in campaigns, and I should have explained that further.
The reason I wrote that is, a local fellow ran as a write-in for City Council across the river in Rock Hill, SC. He could have had his name appear on the ballot by simply filling out the paperwork in a timely fashion, but he did not. This set of circumstances do not apply to Mitchell-El, nor did it apply to Peter Healy in New Paltz. I do understand write-in campaigns when the system keeps us off the ballot, and I hope Mitchell-El kicks some serious write-in butt, as I do Healy.

Maria Allwine won't say die
And God bless her for that! Running for President of the Baltimore City Council, Allwine can count on the backing of the 1% of the city who are registered Greens, but how will she reach the 79% who are registered as Democrats?
That's the $64 question, and always is.

Wheaton, IL - William Edgar of Wheaton has declared his candidacy for DuPage County Board as a Green Party candidate. He becomes the first declared DuPage County Board candidate for the newly established Green Party.
"I am seeking public office to bring financial responsibility back to government, strengthen our security and infrastructure for future generations, revitalize local business, and prioritize assistance to government agencies affecting the neediest citizens," says Edgar.
Edgar believes in embracing the DuPage County mission statement, that our communities will always be desirable places to live, work, and raise families by providing innovative, cost-effective services, promoting a high quality of life for all residents, and act as a leader with local and regional partners in anticipating issues and developing solutions.
A nine-year Wheaton resident, Edgar is married with three young daughters, including one with a form of autism called Asperger's Syndrome. "We recently learned that our child has autism," says Edgar. "Although it is difficult at times, she is a true blessing."
Edgar is a ten-year stakeholder in a local Wheaton information technology consulting and staffing business and is currently the company president. He is also co-chair of the DuPage County Green Party.

Iranian union activist faces blindness because of government there
I got a message from Eric Lee of Labourstart.org today about the case of Mansour Osanloo, leader of Tehran's bus driver's union. It seems he risks losing his eyesite without medical help, which the government is denying him.
One of the things Greens must decide on is, do we consider the enemy of our enemy to be our friend, or do we stand consistently for principle. The Iranian government oppresses unions and women. They kill homosexuals, and jail those who don't tow the line. These folks are dispicable despots undeserving of our support. Click the "Read more!" link and find out how you can participate in Amnesty International's campaign to save Mansour Osanloo's sight.
Mansour Osanloo, the jailed leader of the bus workers' union in Tehran, faces the possible loss of his eyesight unless he receives urgent medical attention -- which the Iranian authorities are denying him.
Amnesty International has just now launched an online campaign calling on the Iranian government to allow Osanloo to receive medical attention. I urge all of you to sent off your messages today. The Iranian government must be made aware that the world is watching.
The International Transport Workers Federation (ITF), which has spearheaded the international campaign in defense of Osanloo, has now produced a short film entitled "Freedom Will Come" which tells his story. It can be viewed online on YouTube, and will shortly be available as a DVD as well.
If every reader of this message passes it on to a few friends and colleagues, we can flood the Iranian government with email messages -- but we must do this quickly, before Osanloo loses his vision.

Ahmad Ali Mitchel-El, Green Party member, and write-in candidate for Suffolk County Executive, has released his vision for addressing immigration issues in Suffolk County.
"Both President Bush's guest worker program, and Governor Spitzer's driver's license issue, show more progressive leadership than the current attitude of our county administration," notes Mitchel-El.
Mitchel-El states, "Hiring Centers should be part of an overall plan to make the immigration process work. You don't have to maintain a hostile, illegal status for undocumented people. We can work towards a naturalization process that can really make sense, by registering day laborers, paying them fair wages, and letting them pay taxes, in order to pay for all this."
Mitchel-El is a lifelong resident of Suffolk County, a professional musician, and a producer on progressive radio station WBAI 99.5 FM. Mitchel-El is also a peace and justice activist, who has performed at the PeaceSmiths Coffeehouse in Amityville. Mitchel-El's campaign has already received coverage in the media, including: the opinion page of Newsday; "Noticias" newspaper; "Wake Up Call with Jim Krivo" and "In The Moment" on WBAI radio; and "'Tis Treason" on WUSB radio.
The Green Party is an alternative to the Democrats and Republicans. The Green Party has 10 key values, which include "social and economic justice" and "diversity." Greens at the local, state and national level have supported tolerance and justice for undocumented people.

I find it so hypocritical that the people who control politics and thus government are predominantly descendants of Europeans who did not have to face the racist bureaucracy that Latinos face today. We do not hear complaints about the Canadian border or about Russian and Irish undocumented immigrants--only these Latinos, who can’t seem to physically just assimilate and disappear into the work force.
When is America going to wake up and recognize its own evil history? Here on Long Island, we can’t even allow the Shinnecock the sovereignty over their own land. Can we still be in denial about crimes committed against the native population? All of us need to stop and fight the policies of exclusion and preservation of privilege, level the playing field, make it fair for all humans.
When a company sponsors an immigrant, he actually becomes indentured to that company for the term of his process at a rate of pay inferior to his domestic equivalent. He can’t leave to compete for a higher paying job. And, the companies get away with hiring employees off of the street, who are non-union workers, who they can pay less than scale, give no benefits and no fair compensation. Yet, the company is not penalized.

Ahmad Ali Mitchel-El, Green Party member, and write-in candidate for Suffolk County Executive, has released his vision for addressing immigration issues in Suffolk County.
"Both President Bush's guest worker program, and Governor Spitzer's driver's license issue, show more progressive leadership than the current attitude of our county administration," notes Mitchel-El.
Mitchel-El states, "Hiring Centers should be part of an overall plan to make the immigration process work. You don't have to maintain a hostile, illegal status for undocumented people. We can work towards a naturalization process that can really make sense, by registering day laborers, paying them fair wages, and letting them pay taxes, in order to pay for all this."
Mitchel-El is a lifelong resident of Suffolk County, a professional musician, and a producer on progressive radio station WBAI 99.5 FM. Mitchel-El is also a peace and justice activist, who has performed at the PeaceSmiths Coffeehouse in Amityville. Mitchel-El's campaign has already received coverage in the media, including: the opinion page of Newsday; "Noticias" newspaper; "Wake Up Call with Jim Krivo" and "In The Moment" on WBAI radio; and "'Tis Treason" on WUSB radio.
The Green Party is an alternative to the Democrats and Republicans. The Green Party has 10 key values, which include "social and economic justice" and "diversity." Greens at the local, state and national level have supported tolerance and justice for undocumented people.
Election day is Tuesday, November 6, 2007. In order to show support for Ahmad Mitchel-El and the Green Party, you may write Mitchel-El's name in the slot at the top of the voting machine. A pencil should be provided, and a poll worker can help direct you.

I find it so hypocritical that the people who control politics and thus government are predominantly descendants of Europeans who did not have to face the racist bureaucracy that Latinos face today. We do not hear complaints about the Canadian border or about Russian and Irish undocumented immigrants--only these Latinos, who can’t seem to physically just assimilate and disappear into the work force.
When is America going to wake up and recognize its own evil history? Here on Long Island, we can’t even allow the Shinnecock the sovereignty over their own land. Steven Colbert to run for Prez in South Carolina? NOT!
It's so funny to see the Gravy Train media falling all over themselves to condemn..or praise...Steven Colbert for announcing that he's going to enter the Democratic and Republican Presidential Primary.
Only one problem...the Democratic and Republican parties in South Carolina provide the Elections Commission a list of candidates to put on the ballot. There is NO OTHER WAY to get on the ballot in South Carolina in the Democratic or Republican primaries. I can't get on their ballot without their assent, and neither can Steven.
So, Colbert Nation, take a clue from a Green and give up on this Quixotic endeavor.
BUT...with NINE ballot qualified political parties in South Carolina, it is possible that he could make the November ballot with one of them.
Let's see...Green, Libertarian, United Citizens, Working Families, Labor, Constitution or Independence parties...or should he help the Southern Party get on the ballot, giving us a round number of 10 political parties?

While I have decided to turn most of my attention to local affairs and away from national, occasionally I will post about national topics, and this is one of those times.
Clifford Thornton has agreed to seek a position on the national party steering committee. This would seem to be very good news indeed. Thornton was our nominee for Governor of CT, and has been out front on the Green Agenda and it's implications for Black voters for some time. Recognizing that severe sentences for drug offenders tears families apart and does not end drug abuse, Thornton made drug law reform a centerpiece of his campaign.
Thornton is a member of the resurgent Green Party Black Caucus, and I can't help but believe that both the Black Caucus and the national Green Party will benefit from him seeking a seat on the national steering committee.

Admit it, you've used "It's not easy being Green" too...
I kinda chuckle when people say that to me. It's as though they feel validated that being Green is difficult because a puppet told them so.
But as I said, I have used that same line, so how trite am I? *actually laughed*

Not sure why people do this sort of thing
but a founding member of the New Paltz Green Party is running a write-in campaign for county legislator, a seat I take to be comparable to a county council. Peter Healy is reportedly running because multiple candidates are running un-opposed.
But, it's not like elections sneak up on us. They are scheduled from here to eternity. Why not just get on the ballot instead of inconveniencing the voter by requiring that they write your name in? Maybe there is a great reason, but I am not sure I would get it.

It's a discussion of the benefits of eating locally.
Here's the deal if you ask me. We are fighting against globalization and perhaps we should consider changing our approach to encouraging localism. The cost of transportation will eventually grow so steep that it will not make economic sense to build a refrigerator in China and ship it to Chile, nor grow grapes in Chile and ship them to China.
If we are on the cutting edge of this coming change from global to local, we get to set the agenda...and how cool would that be?

Cindy Sheehan announces: McKinney is running for President
This video is from "Impeach at the Beach", an event Northern CA Greens pulled together as I understand it.
In the video Sheehan says that Rep. McKinney is running for President, and Rep. McKinney is waving a green flag and wearing a green shirt.
One thing that this video brings up though, that we Greens cannot ignore, is Sheehan saying that she gets threatened every week. These people, folks like McKinney and Sheehan, are in need of and deserving of a serious security plan whenever we are working with them. Likewise any person with a high profile, and at any of our more public events. We should always be aware of who is around and what they are doing. Non-violence is one of our principles, not theirs.

Cynthia McKinney update

Secondly, Wes Rolley of California has posted some important details of Rep. McKinney's visit to CA and her apparent plan to run as a Green for Prez. Those details are at Green Commons.
The bottom line seems to be that she has plans to relocate to CA and has her Green Party registration in hand.
I am certain that Democrats will be falling all over each other trying to find ways to convince her to "behave" and "be responsible", but somehow I believe she understands that it is our nation's current batch of leaders who are misbehaving and being irresponsible.
The national debt alone is cause enough to toss almost the entire crew onto the "ash heap of history".
Let's get it started!

Since the proposed change failed by a 4 to 5 vote, after she gets elected it will pass by the same margin..I hope!

Fog City Journal says McKinney is running
I'll be honest here, I am confused as hell. Why send a message to the national party saying that you are not interested, and then appear to be interested? Of course, I have never operated at Rep. McKinney's level, so I am 100% certain that I can't understand all the ins and outs of her decision making process.
So...here's what seems to be the latest. She's running. Maybe.

I'm not sure how that could be since there is no state recognized Green Party in GA I believe, and she changed her registration to "declined to state" or something similar from democrat recently.
At any rate, I am excited at the prospect of her running, and have written her to ask her to run. I hope she does so, and I hope she announces soon so we can begin to use her skills to build the party in hopes of creating a better future for us all.

When my daughters heard Ralph Nader speak at a super-rally (we had it on a CD) they were both impressed.
When they heard Winona LaDuke speak, they were transfixed. Her message and style were perfect for reaching my girls, and I was so proud of us for nominating her. I concider it a tragedy that she has not helped lead the Green Party after her Veep runs.

Green Party co-chair and candidate speaks out
Some states are run lock-stock-and-barrel by one or the other corporate parties. One of these, I gather, is New Jersey.
I'll say that some of the most passionate Greens I have ever "met" were from NJ, including co-chair Liz Arone. She's running for a state legislative seat, and doing so flying the Green Party banner high. If you click on the link you can read all about her campaign ideas.

Off again, on again?
While I posted here and at Green Commons that Cynthia McKinney had rejected the proposal that she run for President as a Green based on what was at the site "AllThingsCynthiaMcKinney.org", today I found that she has apparently not moved entirely away from seeking the party's nod. This article says that she is still mulling the decision over, and is currently on a "California Greens to Draft McKinney" tour of that state.
I sure would like to see us at least have the opportunity to grow that a run by a person of substantial note can give us. Personally, I am on a three year plan to seize control of my county and town government...then I'll support a Green for President and perhaps get an appointment, eh? Do you have to be a lawyer to be Attorney General? If you do, I'll just take a seat on the Supreme Court. Not only do you not have to be a lawyer, you don't even have to pretend to be fair! It's a LIFETIME appointment.

And it's the question I'm asking you now -- to each and every person on this mailing list.
Less than two weeks ago, a man you've never met or even heard of, who lived in a country you may know very little about, was gunned down by masked criminals while leaving his house to go to work.
Murders happen every day. Why single this one out?
The man killed was Marco Tulio Ramírez Portela. He was in charge of sports and culture for the banana workers union in Guatemala. This is the union that organizes Del Monte workers. The bananas you eat may have been picked by members of his union.
Marco Tulio's murder on 23 September was part of a pattern of rising anti-union violence in Guatemala.
And as we've pointed out before, 144 trade union activists were killed in 2006. That's a big increase over the previous year. Note..emphasis added
If we don't make a special effort, we may become apathetic. And we may begin to accept -- by our silence -- what we know we cannot accept.
Dylan rhetorically asked how many deaths will it take?
The answer for all us should be this: Just one.
Marco Tulio's murderers are benefiting from a culture of impunity in Guatemala. Those behind the murder are convinced that few will have heard his name and fewer still will have raised their voices in protest.
Unions across Latin America have raised the cry -- "¡Basta de impunidad en Guatemala!" Unions around the world -- your union -- must take up this slogan as well.
Please, take a few seconds and go to this link -- send the strongest possible message to the authorities in Guatemala that trade union activists are not legitimate targets for assassins and death squads.

National Green Party targets nine races
The national party has issued a Press Release listing nine campaigns amongst the almost 200 races Greens are in this year, which will get special attention from the national party.

He's coming to Charlotte tomorrow, but other than a few posts to the Charlotte Area Green Party by Gray Newman, formerly of the Cobb camp and a resigned member of the national steering committee, I have heard not a peep about the visit.

Christian Conservatives may support 3rd party effort
Of course, the republicans are throwing all the same crap at them that Democrats throw at us. "They will ruin the republican's chances. They need to forget getting their demands met and support the lesser evil to avoid a democratic victory."
We've heard such claptrap before, and I seriously doubt than any of my readers are going to fall for that "logic". Like advocates for social justice, non-violence, grassroots democracy and ecological wisdom have the Green Party to turn to, the Christian Conservatives have the Constitution Party at the ready.
